“In designing ‘Sfrido’, I wanted to approach this type of object by trying to study, as well as a new form, a new way of using it, to make a product that would be convenient but not perceived as a simple tool. Hence the idea to maintain the size very compact in order to create a Vegetable peeler that, rather than act as an extension of the arm, reduced the distance between the hand and the vegetable, making the gesture more natural, leaving the user to decide how to hold it.”

About

Valerio Sommella is an Italian Industrial designer, born in Tuscany in 1980. He graduated cum laude at the Politecnico of Milan in 2004, and began his design career with Stefano Giovannoni. After working for Marcel Wanders’ team in Amsterdam, he moved back to Milan where he founded Valerio Sommella Design Studio in 2009. He has collaborated with a wide range of companies, focusing on everyday objects, furniture, lighting and accessories, with the same attention for small scale production as well as mass market.

He considers every project as an opportunity to challenge his idea of design, a constant dialogue between context, users, materials, technologies and beauty. The resulting objects are not chapters of the same book, but short stories, each one with its own plot, characters and finale.

Over the years his Studio developed projects for companies such as Alessi, Moooi, Kundalini, Calligaris, Honda, Falmec, Konica minolta, Modo, Panasonic, and many others.
